Mental health is the ability to love, the ability to work, the ability to play and the ability to use your mind soundly.                                               Ashley Montagu.

Everyone needs balance in their lives, a give and take that allows time for work, relaxation, socialization and pursuing outside interests. Allowing equal space for each of these areas can bring diversity and depth to daily living, provide outlets for creativity and enjoyment and create opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.  Do you remember playing on a seesaw and trying to achieve a balance with you and a friend sitting on opposite ends of the board, suspended in the air without the board moving up or down? When you did this, that meant the weight on either end of the board was equally distributed. But if or your friend hopped off, the board quickly became unbalanced.  A life that’s imbalanced has too much emphasis in one area and not enough in others. So if you live for your work, spend each night in front of the television, or book your calendar solid with social activities other areas will be ignored. While it may be impossible to give equal time to every area, it is possible to make cutbacks in activities that receive more attention than others. Even cutting one hour from work each week and redistributing it to relaxing, socializing or enjoying a hobby can make a big difference in your mental health.   Imagine the areas in your life as equal parts of the pie so that you can give time to each area today.
