HOW TO BREAK BAD HABITS
Tension is a habit, relaxing is a habit. Bad habits can be broken, Good habits can be broken. WilliamJames
Nail biting, smoking, daily alcohol consumption, over eating snapping at others, finger drumming are all habit habits used to relieve tension. Yet each does very little to alleviate the tension. For example reaching for a cigarette wont make a deadline easier to meet, just as snapping to your child wont ease a family tension.
Daily tension can make bad habits almost a way of life. But if you can begin to recognize the early signs of tension _ a headache, upset stomach, or muscle aches in your shoulders or back _ you can use them as warning signals that you need to change your pace or take a moment to relax before you resume any activity.
What is you body saying to you right now? Are you relaxed and alert? Are you tired and sluggish? Are there muscles that feel tight and uncomfortable? Such body awareness can help you break bad habits you have acquired. By staying in touch with your body reaction to stress through out the day, you can be more aware of when you need to take a break. Then instead of biting your nails or reaching for alcohol, you can go for a walk, prepare a cup pf herbal tea, or close your eyes and do some deep breathing. Even a three-minute break can give your body a chance to relieve tension and renew its energy.
Replace your bad habits with good habits by listening to your body and taking relaxing breaks when you need them
