Several years ago while jogging in Chattanooga, Tennessee, I passed a beautiful home which had been restored and then boarded up. A sign on the front stated, “Trespassers will be shot – Survivors will be shot again.” The message was clear.
The Canadian government found a clear way to communicate the dangers of smoking to their young people. They put on a package of cigarettes, “Smoking can kill you,” and it was so effective that 83% of the 2,471 students polled, ranging from twelve to seventeen years in age, remembered that message. In America, the wording on cigarette packages is bland, quoting the Surgeon General’s warning that “Smoking can be hazardous to your health.” Only six percent of American students polled remembered even a couple of those words.
Sometimes we communicate without saying even one word. When Benjamin Franklin lived in Philadelphia, he recognized the need for street lights, but things were different in those days and city governments did not have budgets to light streets. Franklin took action and erected a beautiful post in front of his home with a lantern on top. At dusk he lit the lantern but said nothing to anyone about it. After three or four nights, a neighbor followed suit, then another. Soon the whole street was lighted and it spread across town. Franklin’s example sent a simple but effective message and demonstrated again that example is the best teacher.
In today’s high-tech world we communicate via our smartphones, email, Twitter, television, satellite and every electronic gadget imaginable. But the most effective communication still takes place face to face with the spoken word, provided we “practice what we preach,” because people might not believe everything you say, but they will believe everything you do. Give it a try and I will SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

To your success through communication,
Every minute spent in planning saves ten minutes in execution. The purpose of strategic planning in a corporation is to reorganize and restructure the activities and resources of the company so as to increase the “return on equity,” or return on the money invested and working in the company. The purpose of “personal strategic planning” is for you to increase your “return on energy,” the return on the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual capital you have invested in your life and career.
Every minute that you spend planning your goals, your activities, and your time in advance saves ten minutes of work in the execution of those plans. Therefore, careful advance planning gives you a return of ten times, or 1,000 percent, on your investment of mental, emotional, and physical energy.
It takes only about 10-12 minutes for you to make up a plan for your day. This investment of 10-12 minutes will save you time of approximately two hours per day, or a 25 percent increase in productivity and performance, in ROE, from the first day that you begin planning your day in advance.
The key to personal efficiency is for you to use a good time planner. Virtually any planner will work if you will discipline yourself to use it as the core of your time management system. Today, Palm Pilots and personal digital assistants (PDA), in combination with personal computers, can enable you to plan your time with greater efficiency than has ever been possible.
“A Goal Without a Plan is Only
If you dream of achieving great things in life, planning for making them a reality on paper is vital to your success.
The Life Planning Process is a step-by-step manual to help you set and achieve your goals. Using this Action Workbook will guarantee that you stay on course, on time and on target. Learn more here >>
Begin with a master list as the foundation of your time planning system. Write down everything that you can think of that you will need to do for the indefinite future. As new ideas, goals, tasks, and responsibilities arise; write them down on your master list. Don’t trust them to memory. Plan each month in advance by transferring the appropriate items from your master list to your monthly list. This is best done the last week of each month. Plan each week in advance by transferring items from your monthly list to your weekly list. This is best done the weekend before.
Plan Everything in Detail
Plan every project, meeting, and goal in detail, before you begin. The very act of planning forces you to think better and more accurately about everything you do. The more you think about and plan something on paper, the faster and more efficiently you will accomplish it when you start work.
Regular planning assures that you spend more time on activities of higher value. This increases effectiveness and your efficiency in everything you do. Perhaps, the most important rule of all if for you to “think on paper!”
Discipline yourself to work only on those activities that have the most significant impact and influence on your life. Get them done quickly and well. Once you develop this habit of planning and prioritizing, your stress level will decline, your productivity will increase, and your career will take off.

Human beings have a profound need for belonging, whether you call it company, family, community or tribe. We want to and need to click or connect with others. Social networks have become the new tribes. Now belonging is as easy as registering and filling out our profile, and making or finding a few contacts or “friends.” Staying connected is much easier, too. Twitter even brings it into real time. Opinions are everywhere, and people love to share them, so in your social network connections you can easily find people to discuss just about anything. And you can learn from the brightest minds.
Author Tom Peters used to say that “he who dies with the biggest Rolodex wins.” Business networks are the Rolodexes of today. It’s not so much who’s in your address book that counts, it’s who is in your business network that counts more. And your value to the network is related to the value of your network. That’s because business networks make what used to be invisible visible, by putting all your contacts and connections out in the open where others can have access to them.
But making connections with the connections of your connections requires a careful dance. Because if you ask to be connected without an introduction, the person seeking quality in their network is likely to decline. And if you ask for someone’s business merely because they are on the same network as you, the odds are good that your offer will be declined. Whether offline or on, you need to start and then build a relationship before you can do much with it. You need to “click” first.
To click with your new tribe, I offer you these cautions:
1. Don’t spam your network. SPAM, rather than the canned ham product, is an unsolicited commercial message sent electronically. The fastest way to keep a connection from happening is to try selling your ideas, products or services to people who don’t know you. That’s likely to be perceived, rightly, as SPAM. And I’ll say it again. DON’T SPAM YOUR NETWORK!
2. Don’t be a stranger. Learn something before saying something. Tell people how you found them, or find out how they found you. Find a reason to make the connection interesting. That’s different than a generic, “Hi, I found you and thought your resume was interesting.” Strangers talk in such big generalizations. When it’s personal, people click. Find something personal around which to connect.
3. You get out what you put in. Instead of asking for something, offer something. And I’m not talking about a free sample, either. Tell the network what you bring to it, whether it is knowledge, ability, or connections. Then make what makes you valuable to the network available to the network.
Online networks take time. Not a lot of time, but the more consistently you contribute to your online presence, the more likely you are to gain recognition and make connections with valuable allies and friends.
4. Go fast by slowing down. Years back, I read a satirical book called the One Minute Maniac. It talked about Turbo Networking. That’s where you rush up to people and say, “Hi, what’s in it for me?” That’s annoying, and adds pressure to an already pressure-cooked world. Yes, electronic communication happens at the speed of, well, electrons. But human beings tend not to move quite so fast when it comes to relationship building. Think of time as an ally. Take as much of it as you need to build some relationship before trying to get someone to click with you or your idea.

Criticism can be very subtle in the way it creeps into our thoughts. Here are some examples of criticism to help you become aware of its subtlety, so you can eliminate it from your thoughts:
The weather is awful today.
The traffic is terrible.
The service is really bad.
Oh no, look at the line.
He/she is always late.
How long do we have to wait for our order?
That motorist is a lunatic.
It’s so hot in here.
I’ve been on hold for so long!
These are subtle things, but the law of attraction is listening to them all. You have the ability to appreciate something in every single circumstance. There is always something to be grateful for.
May the joy be with you,
The Secret… bringing joy to billions
We’ve all heard them, the voices in our heads that condemn us and find us guilty of not doing enough or doing things differently. As important as your past is, you cannot change your past, but you can affect your future.
The negative messages in your mind may tell you that you’re not good enough, you’re a failure, you are not capable of doing a certain thing, and you’ll never get out of debt, or come out of a particular situation. You may repeat in your mind an event that happened in the past over and over again. This is a distraction. If the designer of negativity can keep you focused on the negative messages or your past failures, he knows you will never get to your true purpose or reach your destiny.
Examine how you respond to the majority of situations that life presents to you. Do you see the opportunity for learning, improvement, and success, or do you view most situations as another opportunity to not do well? Let’s establish some foundational truths about our lives and discover how to use those truths in place of the perceived fact or interpretation of life events; especially in the area of failure.
Our responses (positive) or reactions (negative) to any given situation are usually based upon our interpretation (belief) of an experience. These experiences can be seen, heard, or handed down to us from someone in our family.
These beliefs can have a positive or negative impact upon our thinking, depending upon the interpretation our mind gives to an experience. This interpretation can also shape our concepts of life, and drive our performance to success or failure.
You can live a life filled with love, joy, and peace. Live a life of forgiveness through the truth, and nothing you can do will separate you from the love you were designed to have once you invite that truth to be a part of your life.
Man tries to be too analytical, but the concepts are simple. Love and concern for each other, even in the business world with an attitude of serving others, will take you further than anything. Don’t try to analyze everything so much. Serve. The enemy of your future wants to make you think you cannot be loved or forgiven, and he constantly tries to remind us of the past.
The tendency can be to focus on the failures, pains, and hurts of the past, and it is all a distraction, period! If you can stay distracted by focusing on these things, you will never progress forward with life the way it should be for you.
Failure in anything when effort has been put forth is not failure, but merely a learning experience. However, there are certain patterns that we may develop, and those patterns can be detrimental to achieving a particular goal.
Some of the questions you may want to ask yourself are:
• Do I set unrealistic goals for myself?
• Do I expect too much from myself?
• Do I try to imitate others and follow their aspirations, rather than mine?
• Do I feel isolated at social gatherings or group meetings?
• Am I timid and afraid to take the risk?
• Am I afraid of success or failure?
• What does success mean to me?
Perhaps when you tried things in the past, they did not work out for you. Maybe you tried a business and it went bankrupt. So you fear you will fail again. We fear we will fail because we focus on that which is behind us, and not on what is ahead.
Don’t ever believe you are meant for failure or sickness, or to be stuck or unproductive, that it is the will for your life; it’s simply not true. As Zig says, YOU, were born to win.
Timothy Harwell is the author of Live Your Destiny Now, Not Later! Through the many challenges of life, Timothy has risen above it all. Having lost his father when he was fourteen, Timothy has always maintained the strong work ethic his family taught him. Having 18 years of experience in the construction industry, transitioning to television, then training and training development, business consulting and coaching, Timothy holds most dear the idea that we can all achieve the potential seeded within us.
The two previous weeks have dealt with reasons one and two why most people don’t have an organized goals program. First is fear; second is a poor self-image. The third reason is that, though many people have been repeatedly told they need to have a goals program, most of them have never been completely sold on the idea. That’s one of the reasons over 80% of college graduates, ten years after completing their education, earn their living in a field which is unrelated to their college major. Think about how much farther along they would have been had they determined earlier what they wanted to do with their lives.
Several years ago, David Jensen at UCLA conducted a study on the people who attended public seminars where I spoke. These people come from every walk of life and include psychiatrists, truck drivers, military personnel, household executives, entrepreneurs, sales people, managers, business owners, physicians, educators and virtually every other occupation. Those who specifically set goals, and develop a plan of action to reach them, earn an average of $7,401 per month. Those who do not set goals earn an average of $3,397 per month.
The rest of the story is equally, perhaps even more, exciting. The people who set their goals were happier, healthier and got along better with the people at home, which simply means that not only were they more prosperous, but they had a much better balance in their lives. Think about it, If you have specific objectives in your personal, family and career life, combined with specific objectives in your physical, mental and spiritual life, with a game-plan for reaching each one, doesn’t it make sense that goal-setting improves your chances of doing something significant with your life? Think about it and I’ll SEE YOU AT THE TOP – if you set those goals. Next week we will deal with the fourth reason people do not set goals, which is they don’t know how.
This article is an excerpt from Zig’s book Over the Top. Zig Ziglar is known as America’s motivator. He is the author of 29 books and numerous audio and video recordings.
The basic goal-reaching principle is to understand that you go as far as you can see, and when you get there you will always be able to see farther. ~Zig Ziglar
Dear Nightingale Conant customer,
When it comes to important communication, most of us spend the bulk of our time worrying about what we are going to say: the words we’ll use and the way those words fit together to express whatever it is we are trying to get across.
But when it comes to powerful, effective communication, the truth is how you say your words matters far more than the words themselves!
I’m talking about your voice.
That’s right! The way your voice sounds is an unbelievably critical component in any successful communication.
Research has shown that the words you speak account for about 7 percent of what makes you believable to someone else. Just 7 percent!
So what accounts for the other 93%? Tonality and physiology: the way you sound when you’re communicating and what your body is doing while you’re communicating.
The instant you begin speaking, people listening to you begin to form very definite opinions and judgments about your intelligence, your personality, your sincerity, your authority, your abilities, your background, and more.
These opinions begin to form and solidify within the first five seconds of your speech – long before the actual words you’re saying begin to take on any significant meaning for the listener. And once established, they can be extremely difficult to change. Even when the words you’re saying completely contradict the message your tonality is sending.
That’s why even the most carefully worded, painstakingly practiced speech, presentation, or conversation can go completely awry.
Communicate with charisma, clarity, and absolute precision,
using the secret weapon of the stars!
People who use their voice to make a living – like actors, singers, radio personalities, motivational speakers, and politicians – are acutely aware of this. They know that if they want to succeed, they need to be able to communicate clearly and precisely, and they need to be able to accurately predict their audiences’ reactions and opinions.
As a result, these stars spend a lot of time and money learning how to understand and gain control over their voices. And over and over again, they’ve turned to one man to help them do it… Roger Love.
Roger has spent more than 25 years helping to build some of the most successful talents in the business and entertainment worlds. he’s the vocal coach to Anthony Robbins, Suze Orman, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, and a host of superstar musicians, actors and actresses.
You may not be a movie star or public speaker. And you may never have given more than a passing thought to the sound of your voice. But the fact is, you’re constantly communicating with “audiences” of one kind or another: your clients, colleagues, kids, spouse, and all the other people you encounter throughout the course of a day.
Your level of achievement, happiness, and satisfaction in life is directly related to the outcomes of those communications.
If you want them to be as successful as possible, it is vital that you gain control of the one factor that, more than any other, determines communication success…
In his Nightingale-Conant audio program Vocal power, Roger Love will teach you how to truly understand the power of your voice, maximise its pluses, and minimise its flaws. You’ll exude confidence and charisma every single time you speak, and when you do, your audience will hear exactly what you want them to hear.

What do people really hear when YOU start talking?
If you’ve ever been surprised by the way your voice sounds on an answering machine, then you know that the voice you hear in your head is very different from the one the rest of the world hears.
In the very first session of Vocal Power, you’ll take an ‘Instant Evaluation’ that will enable you to hear yourself the way other people hear you, and identify where your vocal problems may lie.
* Is your voice too gravelly or too breathy?
* Too low or too high?
* Are you using too much air, or not enough?
You’ll find out for sure when you take this evaluation. And then you’ll discover what you can do about it.
Create vocal masterpieces with the universal ingredients of speaking success
Volume. Tone. Pitch. Melody. Pace. If you’re not a singer, you probably don’t give much thought to these things. But every time you speak, each one of these elements comes into play – for better or for worse.
You might think of them as raw ingredients. Combine them in the right amounts and in the right way using a great recipe, and you’ll create something fantastic. Throw them together with no thought and no plan, and you could end up with a disaster on your hands.
More than anything else, communicating your message and emotions clearly is a matter of using volume, tone, pitch, melody, and pace in the right way.
In Vocal power, you’ll learn how to identify and control each of these elements in your own voice to achieve the desired vocal effect: Confident in a job interview. Calm when sharing a potentially upsetting piece of news. Authoritative when conducting a meeting with employees or making a presentation to clients or whatever quality you want to express in a given situation.
And that’s just the beginning.
In these 12 “how-to”-packed sessions, you’ll learn dozens and dozens of simple nuts and bolts techniques, exercises, tips, and strategies that will literally transform your voice into an amazingly powerful tool.
Including how to:
* Instantly sound stronger and more powerful by doing just one thing differently
* Master the “secret voice” that will miraculously change every sound that comes out of your mouth
* Create deliberate, predictable effects on your listeners by controlling the sounds you bring into your voice
* Match your voice to a wide range of messages, circumstances or situations without ever sounding artificial or unnatural
* Eliminate annoying, distracting “fillers” such as “um” and “uh” from your speech forever
* Permanently conquer stage fright
* Use food and drink effectively to keep your voice in prime condition (There’s a lot of misinformation on this subject. Roger sorts fact from fiction.)
* Maintain ideal posture throughtout any speech or presentation without giving it a second thought
* Record the perfect voice-mail message (You’ll never cringe at your own voice again!)
* And so much more!
You’ll also learn how to align your new found vocal power with a confident physiology and mindset.
No more awkward hands, shuffling feet, or darting eyes. Roger will help you identify and break the bad mind and body habits you have now, and replace them with gestures, postures, expressions, and ideas that communicate strength and confidence from the inside out.
All the techniques Roger shares are easy to understand and practice. And you’ll find that they quickly become second nature. You won’t have to think about what pace you should be speaking at or how much melody you should put into your voice. You’ll simply do it. Your voice will instinctively adapt itself to the emotion and intent of every message you want to send.
In the end, you’ll know how to harmonise your voice, body, and mind into one smooth, synchronised, powerful communication machine.
Before you get to the end of the first session, you’ll experience the ways these simple exercises can enhance and enliven your voice.
And as soon as you use them out in the real world of everyday communications, I guarantee you’ll be amazed by the results.
People who know you will immediately recognise a positive change in you. They might ask you if you’ve lost weight or changed your hairstyle. What they’ll be noticing, without realising it, is a powerful new aura of self-assurance – the natural result of your inner and outer selves being completely in sync.
You’ll find that the people you encounter throughout your day respond differently to you too.
They’ll listen more closely, express more interest, and respond to your communications in exactly the ways you want them to.
You’ll never stop reaping the benefits of this remarkable information, and you’ll feel them in every part of your life.
* You’ll get all 12 sessions on 6 CDS, and a CD-ROM Workbook that details all the exercises Roger shares in the program.
* Your program will also include an incredible DVD that will help you connect your newfound vocal power with the visual aspect of effective communication. When you see Roger progress through the exercises, you’ll really, fully understand what a profound impact the way your voice sounds has on the messages it sends.
* Plus, you’ll also receive a FREE Bonus CD designed to help you make the maximum number of vocal changes in the least amount of time. The simple exercises you’ll discover in these sessions will take you from inexperience to confidence – from shy to amazing.
Every day, all day long, sounds are coming out of your mouth. Either you’re benefiting from those sounds, or you’re suffering from them.
Vocal Power will give you all the information and techniques you need to put your best self forward and get exactly what you want out of every single communication in your life. The effect is nothing short of magical!

For years, leaders have been scratching their heads, wondering what to do with this new generation of high-maintenance workers – with their high expectations (and high productivity) and tendency to split after a year or so.
The good news for leaders is that attracting and retaining these critical younger workers doesn’t require a whole new bag of leadership skills, or even a treasure chest of perks. As an expert in leadership and generational diversity, I have spent nearly a decade touting the importance of understanding how generational differences impact the workplace. In that time, I have also worked with hundreds of world-class leaders who naturally attract hard-working, dedicated, loyal employees of all ages. Without any formal training on generational differences, these exceptional leaders manage to keep their teams engaged and inspired.
What’s their secret? They are brave enough to commit to authentic personal transformation in order to enrich the workplace (and world) around them. Here are three of their most effective strategies:
Know Your Vision
Challenges caused by generational differences are a symptom of a greater problem. When leaders set a clear vision, those generational differences disappear. Employees who know where the company is headed and why, and who understand the importance of their individual contributions, remain focused on the mission – rather than on competing or butting heads with each other. And they stick around longer. A recent Gallup poll shows that companies with unengaged, dissatisfied workers experience greater absenteeism, lower productivity and a 51-percent higher employee turnover rate.
A few years ago, I worked with a Fortune 50 communications company struggling to retain its workers, particularly the younger ones. With a 50-percent turnover rate among employees age 35 and younger, leaders needed to make some changes. I asked dozens of team members across the ranks, “What is your company’s vision?” The only common answer: To make more money.
The senior leaders thought this should be enough for their employees, who were, of course, getting paid. But money clearly wasn’t enough, or they wouldn’t have been calling me. Their employees needed an inspiring vision to work towards as a team. And their company did, after all, provide a service that allowed people to communicate with one another – an inspiring vision in and of itself. These leaders simply needed to clarify the vision, focus on it, communicate it and help employees see how they contributed. Over the next two years, they did just that. The result? A 90-percent increase in retention.
Know Your Team
Regardless of age, we all want plenty of opportunities to grow, feedback on our performance, and to feel like we’re part of a community. World-class leaders value their team members enough to spend time getting to know them, coaching and mentoring them, and showing immense appreciation for all their hard work. Naturally, there are many reasons an employee’s performance may be slipping. Rather than getting annoyed, world-class leaders get curious … and supportive.
Since Linda Cureton became chief information officer (CIO) of NASA, she has traveled constantly to ensure that her widely-dispersed team sees her face and hears her message. Instead of “walk-around leadership,” she has mastered “fly-around leadership.” Few government leaders are willing to travel more than absolutely necessary, but Cureton wants her whole team to feel heard, trusted and empowered, even though many of them didn’t trust in her abilities when she first took over the role. “To gain trust, sometimes you have to trust them,” she told me. “Put important projects in their hands, even if they flat out told you that you were the wrong person for the job.” In just one year as CIO, Cureton received a prestigious Federal 100 award for her transformative leadership.
Know How to Communicate Effectively
You will never hear a world-class leader say, “We aren’t reaching our goal, because they aren’t doing their jobs,” or “These kids today just don’t want to work hard.” Instead, you’ll see them spending time with their teams, listening and looking for new ways to communicate their vision – and appreciation.
Kim Russo, chief operating officer of George Washington University Hospital, understands this well. “Ultimately, high-quality, safe patient care is our number one priority,” she told me. “When our employees have the tools they need to do their jobs, and when they feel like they are my number one priority, our patients get the quality of service they deserve.”
It’s easy to spot world-class leaders. They walk with confidence; yet, they are incredibly approachable. They demand excellence; yet, they provide the support their teams need to succeed. And people want to work hard for them, because they feel cared about and trust in the possibilities their leaders set for the future.
